War has once again returned to Middle Earth.
The Necromancer of Dol Guldur has revealed himself to be the Dark Lord Sauron and has returned to the grim battlements of Barad-dur. Thousands of orcs now roam the mountains and plains of Mordor, and already the lands of Ithilien and southern Gondor have all but fallen to the forces of the Red Eye. With them march the armies of Harad and Rhun, ready to fight for their new master and reclaim the lands taken from them by the western men. In Eriador the goblins of the Misty Mountains and the orcs of Gundabad have emerged from their shadowy caves to wreak havoc on the surrounding lands, and realms that have known peace for generations once again face fire and steel at their borders. And whispers of even darker creatures serving the Dark Lord are carried in the winds. Fell spiders of Mirkwood, wicked trolls of the Coldfells, and the savage wargs of the Anduin Valley all harken to His call, ready to sate their thirst for blood and violence.
But in this bleakest of times, there are those who stand ready to face the coming darkness. The realm of Gondor, though diminished, still stands proud and ready to defend the world of men against their everlasting foe. Northward the kingdom of Rohan readies their lances and bows and prepares to defend their sweeping plains to the last rider, while the cities of Dale and Laketown shore up their defenses and look uneasily to the east. In Eriador the last of the Dunedain continue their vigilant watch, and even the men of Bree put down their plowshares and pick up their spears as word of the turmoil in distant lands spreads west. With them stand the last of the elves of Middle Earth. In the east the woodland elves of Mirkwood and Lothlorien guard their borders from stranger and foe, while the old elven settlements of Rivendell and Mithlond prepare for the final battle of their people. Even the dwarves of the Lonely Mountain and Ered Luin are eager to fight their bitter enemies, and the deep forges of their people once again ring with the forging of arm and armor.
But it is perhaps the unlikeliest of races which holds the key to the salvation, or doom, of Middle Earth. The hobbits of the Shire, safe in their peaceful green lands and unaware of the dangers closing in, find themselves at the center of Sauron's gaze. For the One Ring, the instrument of the Dark Lord's power and darkness, rests in the hands of Frodo Baggins of Bag End, though he realizes not the magnitude of Bilbo's precious bauble. Already sightings of riders robed all in black occur on the roads of Eriador, and should the other races of Middle Earth fail, then all of Sauron's might will fall upon the Shire.
The fate of the free people's of Middle Earth hangs by a thread, and what the future holds for the land is shrouded in darkness. Should they prevail, then the bards will sing of the valor and bravery of their stand against a seemingly unstoppable foe, and perhaps the evil of the world will forever be vanished. But should they fail then nothing will remain of the once great land but fire and ash, and nothing will stand in the way of Sauron's complete domination.
The question is, what will you do? Will the songs tell of your exploits and heroism, or will you revel in the destruction and chaos? What part will you play in Middle Earth, as the Third Age ends, and the Fourth one begins?
The Road Goes Ever On is a Lord of the Rings RP set during the War of the Ring. The site begins near the start of the Fellowship of the Ring when Frodo leaves the Shire alongside Sam to reach Crickhollow. All canon events up to this point have occurred, however everything afterwards is completely up to the members on what happens. This is true for both original and canon characters. What if Faramir had gone instead of Boromir to Rivendell? What if Frodo had never taken the ring onwards, or had been joined by an elf of Mithlond or a man of Rohan? What if Minas Tirith fell to Sauron, or Edoras to Saruman? All of this and more can occur, based on what members do and want. This is our own original version of Middle Earth, so feel free to make the kind of character you want and write the stories you want to experience!
